So, apparently I had my door closed and my CoWorker was discussing how to get the couch I'm giving her and her roomate to her house. How they made the leap from moving couches to pant removal is perplexing, however, I found this transition to be more natural than one might think, and so I am sharing it with you.
I am changing...
Blogs: Come see me at http://ostensibly.vox.com/ for new and interesting stuff
Towns: San Francisco, CA to Richmond, VA (Why do people always laugh when I tell them this?)
Life Choice: I always thought I wanted to work full-time and never go back to school. Boy was I wrong, so it's back to school at the University of Richmond I go.
This past weekend was Christian's birthday, so off we went to Tahoe for a weekend of celebration and eating. While there, I learned the following.
I think I may be over city life.
I'm sorry, but this has got to be the worst idea I've ever heard. Airlines are proposing a standing room area of the airplane, with people "propped against a padded backboard, held in place with a harness." Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't air travel already uncomfortable enough?
Last Saturday, M was kind enough to make reservations for High Tea for us and J at the Ritz in San Francisco. I wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by the assortment of crustless sandwiches and assorted sweet snackables served on circular tiered trays. The room is done up in baroque velvet tapestries with 1800's oil paintings which add to the already lavish ambience. I absolutely loved, it, and am so glad to have had the opportunity to be treated like a princess for $29/Bucks. (Thanks to M for making it happen)
As an adoptee from foreign soil, I have often harbored fantasies of returning to my homeland to explore my roots. This has proved difficult, if not dangerous considering the state of affairs abroad, so my dream has yet to be fulfilled. And still I wonder whether there is somewhere out there where my ancestors wandered. Or maybe where my birth parents met, (under a cedar tree overlooking an olive garden is a favorite daydream of mine). Sadly, I don't believe this will ever happen. With Hammas groups taking over most of Southern Lebanon, the area is sure to be in turmoil for a long time to come.
But still, I have hope. And my hope is spurred by shows on PBS like this one. This story of African American celebrities learning where they came from in Africa, (did you know that all African Americans come from the Northern Regions, and not South Africa like everyone says). The show was poignant, and sometimes funny, with a touching trip for one of the celebrities back to the area where his 8 generations back grandparents were marched three miles, baptized and put on a ship bound for American slavery.
I found the show to be informative and well done, and recommend checking it out for a little brain and soul food rolled into one. And maybe, just maybe if Chris Tucker can show up in a random village and be welcomed in by strangers who say "we missed you"...well then, maybe there's a little hope for me.
